Fact: It is illegal to own ferrets in the states of California and Hawaii as well as in Washington, DC, New York City, and Puerto Rico.

Most laws about ferrets are based on misinformation. Some arguments are

* “Ferrets are wild animals.”  -Actually, ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years.

* “There is no rabies shot for ferrets.”  -In fact, IMRAB-3 has been approved for ferrets since 1991, and no human has ever contracted rabies from a ferret.

* “Ferrets are dangerous, vicious biters.”  -According to the CDC, a ferret is thousands of times less likely to bite than a dog is.

* “A feral ferret population could destroy the environment.”  -In reality, there are no feral domestic ferret populations in North America.

Looks like these lawmakers need to get their facts straight.(caged ferret)

Fact: People have kept ferrets as pets for quite some time. Queen Victoria raised albino ferrets and often gave them as gifts. The famous paintings “Ermine portrait of Queen Elizabeth I” (above), and da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” (below) are often credited as pictures of ferrets. Some historians believe that the painting of Queen Elizabeth is of her own pet ferret and the spots were added by the painter. The ermine was a symbol of royalty so the names of the paintings could be meant as metaphors.
